Auditioning for WSCT

Auditions can be a frightening experience. It can also be one the most exciting moment you will ever experience on stage. It is just you, the director and an audience of performers just like yourself…and yes, feeling all the same "butterflies" and feelings of excitement as yourself. Whether we like them or not, Auditions are as much a part of theater as lights and make-up and thus we must learn to embrace it. The audition gives a director a chance to see you, the actor, perform. In turn, this gives you a chance to show a director your abilities and talent. Listed below are some proven techniques and "Do's and Don'ts" which will help you perform your audition at the very best of your ability. These guidelines will help you whether you intend to perform with WSCT or any other theater across the world. There is also an Audition Form which you may download, fill out, and bring to your audition along with headshot and resume.

Headshots and Résumé's are preferred but NOT Required. Please keep in mind that an audition is a job interview and as such, not everyone who auditions will be cast. Casting is always a very hard decision process for any director and there are many factors outside of talent and or ability that play into casting a particular show. This is why it is important to keep a positive professional attitude at all times during and after your audition. Any director worth his weight would be more then happy to discuss your audition with you if asked. So remember to take a deep breath, relax, and "Break A Leg".

Phillip Stommel- Artistic Director, WSCT

  • Come prepared- Please come to the audition with a prepared piece (monologue and or song for Musicals) no longer then 3 minutes. (Children do not have to prepare a monologue but are welcome to.  The director will have them read from the script for their audition.)  Have the pieces memorized and ready for performance. If you have headshots please remember to bring them attached to your resume. Dress comfortably with room for flexibility. Sweats and or tights and leotard are all acceptable but not required. Comfortable shoes are also a must. Please leave your sandals in your bag for after your stage time. Remember, this is your opportunity to shine.

  • Be Positive and Professional- Your audition starts from the moment you enter the audition room till the moment you leave. Be on time, Be prepared, and Be courteous to those around you. Theater is a team sport and we need to all work together if we are to have a successful show.

  • Use Your Time Wisely- Keep your scene within the allotted time. Do not spend time with multiple set pieces and costumes. Prepare your audition to be done with or without a single chair and in the clothes you have on for the audition.

  • Ask Questions- If this is your first time auditioning or if something is unclear, please ask someone (or the director) for clarification. The production staff would be more then happy to answer any questions you may have prior to the audition by phone, or e-mail. Just drop us a line using our Contact Us page on this site.
